2016 to 2023: 9anime
9anime launched in 2016 and became one of the largest anime addresses on the internet, with the look this site is built on: the near-black page, the purple accents, the spotlight banner, Recently updated with its tabs, the Top anime list and the A-Z strip. The name moved between suffixes, to, org, me, se, gate, as addresses do, and every move sent a wave of "9anime new site" searches.
2023: AniWave
In 2023 the site renamed itself AniWave. "9anime new name", "9anime rebrand" and "what happened to 9anime" all date from that year, and for a while the two names pointed at the same thing.
August 2024: the closure
On 27 August 2024 AniWave closed after action involving Vietnamese authorities and the anti-piracy coalition ACE. "did 9anime get shut down", "9anime shutdown" and "did 9anime get taken down" are searched every month since, and the answer to the historical question is yes: that site closed.
Now
The name people still type is on this address, rebuilt on the 2021 design with everything under it new: every series by the cour with every episode dated, the Recently aired list, My List with episode marks, and a Watch now button that opens each anime on the licensed services carrying it in your country, subbed and dubbed. The address page lists the suffixes and explains how to tell the real site from a copy; the alternatives page answers the other question people ask after a closure.
